Indefinite Leave To Remain

ILR is the means by which non-EEA citizens become settled in the UK. In most circumstances, an individual is able to apply after five years of continuous residence.

There are two ways in which you can apply for settlement in the UK, either by using the five-year route which is the case for most sponsored workers or family members of sponsored workers, or other settled citizens, or you could qualify under the long-residency route after ten years.

Common FAQ

Can I lose my ILR?

ILR grants you several advantages, however, this status can also be lost if you stay outside of the UK for two consecutive years at a time.

Do I need life in UK Test?

Passing the Life in the UK Test is a key part of a successful Indefinite Leave to Remain application.

Do I have to be on the UK with a specific visa?

Being eligible for ILR is dependent on having lived in the UK on a visa that can lead to settlement. For those on a settlement visa, it will be possible to apply for ILR once the minimum time limit for that specific visa time has been met.
