Naturalisation

UK citizenship is something everybody wants due to its freedom to work and study in the country, and the allowance of applying for a British passport.

However, if you haven’t been born in the UK, you cannot automatically claim its citizenship and will have to undergo the process of naturalisation.

Common FAQ

What is naturalisation?

Naturalisation is the legal process by which a person changes their nationality. For long now, foreign nationals living in the UK, and sometimes living abroad, have been able to attain British citizenship through naturalisation.

When can I apply?

For those who hold ILR, permanent residence or Settled Status, it is possible to apply for citizenship after 12 months. However, for those married to a British national, it is possible to become fully naturalised as soon as ILR is obtained.

Can I keep my passport?

You do not have to send your passport to the Home Office alongside your Naturalisation form. As a result, you are permitted to leave and re-enter the country freely in the time it takes for your application to be processed.
